Mentoring is very helpful in situations where people have limited experience (for example teenagers with career support) or where exploring and brainstorming lots of ideas will achieve the best possible goal results, such as in the case of a potential entrepreneur or a business project.
It is less suitable for building soft skills such as confidence, self respect, trust in self or development in our personal lives where the answers come completely from the individual. This situation would be more suited to coaching where the answers come from the client, drawn out through careful questioning and empowerment.
Mentoring offers some suggestions in addition to the carefully selected questions. Where appropriate prompts, suggestions and ideas are offered to be explored with the mentee supporting progression towards their goal.
